Many
satellite systems require that you convert a PC into a router
in order to share the connection. Others provide a dedicated
PC or device that delivers a proxy service to share the connection
with multiple users. The iDirect solution uses a small hardware
box with no moving parts, that includes standard routing features
such as Static IP, RIP2, IGMPv2, DHCP, NAT, DNS caching, VLAN
tagging, GRE Tunnel Acceleration, etc. It delivers a 'hot' 10/100
Ethernet port to connect to your networking gear. The satellite
modem, router, TCP acceleration, and QoS engine are all in a
single, reliable, integrated package.
Service
Delivery Options
Most legacy systems require that the service provider procure
a large chunk of space segment, typically an entire transponder.
This means that they must design their service offering for
a mass market, with an eye to servicing and supporting as
many subscribers as possible on a network. The iDirect solution
supports the ability to economically engineer smaller, customized
service offerings to meet specific customer demands. There
are generally three types of service offerings available that
we shall refer to as Enterprise, Carrier/Premium, and Private
Network. Not network operators offer all three service types.
Due to the flexibility of the iDirect solution for a network
operator to engineer a service offering to specifically address
specific markets, there is variance in the offerings from
different providers. Business Satellite Solutions will work
with you to determine which service offering is best for your
requirements.
Enterprise Service
With this solution, a service provider will generally configure
a service that provides an ‘a la carte' menu of bandwidth
offerings. This is similar to typical business broadband solutions
like DSL and Fixed Wireless that are shared by multiple companies
at reasonably conservative sharing or subscription ratios.
Typical generic service offerings range from 128 Kbps x 64
Kbps up to 4 Mbps x 512 Kbps. This is a good solution for
the enterprise with just a few remote sites. Bandwidth levels
can be upgraded on a per site basis as requirements increase.
Carrier or Premium Services
These services are generally intended to be used for Internet
Cafe's, ISP backhaul service or very high volume business
use. They are also appropriate for solutions that have a high
volume of concurrent VoIP or Video/IP transmissions. Generally
some percentage of the service offering has a built in CIR
to ensure sufficient dedicated bandwidth to meet the saturated
data throughput requirements for these ‘heavy use' applications.
Additional CIR may be available for additional cost to meet
the specific requirements of the situation.
Transportable Solutions
In addition to fixed installations, the iDirect solution is
excellent for mobile or transportable satellite solutions
that can be assembled and commissioned in a matter of a couple
hours, then packed up and moved to a new site as needed. With
this solution, a company might arrive on site, set up and
point the dish, use a GPS to enter the location coordinates
for the dish and bring the system online quickly. With a couple
of VoIP phones and a small switch or hub, a remote site can
have extensions off the corporate PBX, and be connected to
the Internet and/or headquarters in no time.
IDIRECT Internet and
Voice via Satellite
The IDirect can be used for Shared,
Dedicated and SCPC Bandwidth without any change to equipments
or dish and very reliable in terms of services
Connecting ISPs and Businesses from Anywhere
in the World
No
matter where you are or what your existing network, Diacomm
will provide you with a fast, reliable and economical broadband
Internet connection in one single office or a small town or
throughout your whole enterprise with offices and branches
located worldwide.
IDirect is a service designed to manage your communications
via satellite quickly, simply and economically, and above
all independently from any terrestrial communication lines.
IDirect offers you two-way broadband communication that can
grow as your company does - and you can't yet imagine just
how reliable, economical and easy to use satellite can be!
The IDirect solution is based on a compact terminal which
includes all the necessary hardware and software for creating
and managing connectivity. The technology we use offers broadband
via satellite starting from 1 Mbps downstream and 200 Kbps
upstream. By means of a simple telephone call you can activate
new network points, increase the band available and change
the configuration you are using. Our infrastructures and our
management and control centre are connected directly to the
Internet Backbone, and thanks to this there are no additional
costs for ISPs, multiple steps or problems caused by public
network congestion.
If you install the IDirect system you can be operational in
just a few hours - everything you require is included - the
broadband router, satellite modem, antenna, transmitter and
receiver. All you need is electrical power and a suitable
place in which to install the antenna.
Once the service has been activated, the IDirect network control
centre will be active 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to ensure
full effective service operations.
The system can be installed easily - a reduced-size antenna
(0.96 m - 1.2 m) is placed on the roof or in any other suitable
area in your premises, and connected via a coaxial cable to
a IDirect modem (iDirect NetmodemII) which is integrated into
your LAN by means of a standard Ethernet port.

iDirect FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What
does iDirect mean by "one box solution"?
The iDirect remote router is a single unit that encompasses
a satellite modem, IP router, TCP/HTTP Optimization over Satellite,
QoS/Prioritization, and Encryption in one box. This single
compact device replaces multiple components in competing solutions,
and still provides our customers with superior functionality
and bandwidth.
Can iDirect support real-time applications such as VoIP
and streaming video over satellite?
Yes. iDirect’s unique technology ensures higher prioritization
for all real time applications, and reduces jitter as well
as packet loss or degradation. This allows our customer to
utilize their satellite networks for VoIP calls over satellite,
streaming video, or virtually any real time application.
How many remote locations can an iDirect powered network
support?
iDirect equipment is inherently flexible, allowing it to economically
support networks as small as one remote, or as large as thousands
of remote locations. The number of remote sites an iDirect
powered network can support is limited only by the capacity
of the network itself, and the collective bandwidth requirements
of the remote sites.
What speeds are iDirect networks capable of supporting?
iDirect networks are capable of supporting network traffic
starting at 64 Kbps, and aggregating up to speeds of 360 Mbps
in one 20 slot chassis. Additionally, multiple chassis can
be configured within the same hub to support virtually any
requirements (i.e. number of chassis X 360 Mbps).
Are iDirect powered networks secure?
Very secure. iDirect uses a proprietary "frame format" to
carry payload, making it very difficult to extract TCP packets
from within a frame. Additionally, iDirect networks can support
virtually any enterprise or government VPN device, without
sacrificing traffic speeds, or application functionality.
What is D-TDMA?
D-TDMA (which stands for Deterministic TDMA), is a proprietary
version of the TDMA protocol which allocates bandwidth among
multiple remote sites, based on instantaneous conditions.
Several times a second, our D-TDMA feature allocates bandwidth
dynamically based on criteria such as the queued depth at
each remote site, the CIR (Committed Information Rate) configuration,
Quality of Service (QOS) and prioritization requirements,
as well as any rate limiting established at each remote site.
D-TDMA allows a single allotment of bandwidth to be efficiently
and effectively shared among multiple remotes, and has been
proven to be the most efficient in terms of throughput and
satellite resource requirements.
What are the benefits of iDirect vs. DVB?
iDirect is a native IP solution, which provides significantly
more flexibility and efficiency than a DVB format. IP over
DVB has to be encapsulated within an MPEG frame to be transported
over DVB. IP packets must be segmented into MPEG 188 byte
cells further decreasing efficiency. The iDirect D-TDMA protocol
does not operate under these constraints, and consequently
saves 10-50 % capacity versus this inefficient DVB MPEG encapsulation
scheme.
What is the significance of the iDirect 20-slot chassis?
The 20 slot chassis provides carriers with unparalleled scalability
and flexibility. Customers can deploy only as many line cards
as necessary to support their capacity needs, saving them
significant investment. They can easily scale their network
up for greater capacity by simply adding additional cards
as needed.
The 20 slot configuration also allows multiple multi-inroute
networks within the same chassis. This capability allows iDirect
to offer such unique features as the ability to access up
to 5 different satellites from one chassis, or resell the
capacity of a single card to a "virtual network operator".
The physical separation of the cards also provides customers
with true (not virtual) private networks within the same platform.
